Indiana Jones is one of the most iconic movie series ever to grace the silver screen. Its grand-scaled storylines, characters, humorous dialogues and that hair-raising music score by composer John Williams- have secured its place in the annals of cinema history in golden letters. The credit goes to Harrison Ford as much as to the legendary director-producer duo Steven Spielberg & George Lucas. Its third instalment "The Last Crusade" is my personal favourite of the series. Sean Connery aka the James Bond played Henry Jones Sr., father to our hero Indiana.
During the climax, in order to save his dying father, Indiana goes after the three puzzles. Upon conquering these three labours with his valour, wit and wisdom, Indiana meets the centuries-old Knight guarding the Holy Grail- the cup which gives immortal life. He explains that the true grail has to be chosen among the countless cups adorned with gold and jewels lying around in various shapes and sizes. The Nazi Villain who chooses poorly withers away and dies instantly. When it comes to Indiana, he shows his shrewdness again and picks up the most ordinary-looking cheap metal cup exclaiming- that's "the cup of a carpenter".
Jesus Christ is believed to be the son of God and born to virgin Mary of Nazareth with the divine grace. But Joseph, Mary's betrothed (promised husband) was a carpenter by family occupation. In those days it was assumed that one was supposed to learn the trade of his father/house compulsorily. Therefore, Christ has been portrayed indulging in word work many a time. And therefore, Indiana called the holy grail as the cup of a carpenter.
But the relevance of this story doesn't end just here. Harrison Ford was brought into Hollywood by George Lucas as the iconic Han Solo in Star Wars trilogy. But before getting a life-altering major break in Hollywood, Ford took up odd jobs to make ends meet. And during one of these works at Francis Ford Coppola's (Godfather fame) house, he met Lucas by chance. Any guesses what job he was doing there? Installing woodwork- a carpentry job!
Divine providence, isn't it?
